How Much Does a Custom Engagement Ring Cost in Toronto? What Youβre Actually Paying For
If someone gives you one number for βthe cost of a custom engagement ring,β they are answering a different question.
A custom ring is not one product.
A 14K yellow-gold ring with a lab-grown sapphire can sit in one budget.
A platinum ring built around a rare natural sapphire can sit in another.
A natural diamond can change the project by thousands before we even discuss the setting.
If you are comparing custom engagement ring prices in Toronto, I would not start with an average.
I would start with the decisions that actually create the number.
The centre stone usually has the largest effect
Not always, but often.
The price difference between a lab-grown and natural centre stone can be substantial.
Then within each category, price changes with:
- size
- shape
- cut
- colour
- clarity
- origin
- rarity
- certification where relevant
A large lab-grown sapphire can cost less than a much smaller fine natural sapphire.
A large lab diamond can cost far less than a natural diamond of comparable size and grade.
This is why I want to know what you actually value.
Is it size?
Natural origin?
Colour?
A specific shape?
Durability?
Once that is clear, stone sourcing becomes much more rational.
Lab-grown does not mean βcheap ringβ
This distinction matters.
A lab-grown stone can reduce the cost of the centre stone.
It does not make the setting free.
The ring still needs:
- design work
- precious metal
- CAD or model development where required
- casting or fabrication
- stone setting
- finishing
- quality control
A substantial 18K gold ring with a large lab sapphire can still be a serious piece of fine jewelry.
What changed is where the budget went.
Metal can move the price significantly
For my engagement work, the main choices are 14K gold, 18K gold and platinum.
14K uses less pure gold than 18K and is generally less expensive.
18K has a richer gold content and colour, especially in yellow gold, and usually costs more.
Platinum is a different metal entirely: dense, white and particularly appealing when a client wants a naturally white precious metal.
The same design in these materials will not cost the same because the raw material cost, density and fabrication requirements differ.
If you are deciding between them, read 14K vs 18K Gold vs Platinum for an Engagement Ring.
More metal means more money β but sometimes more metal is the right answer
I am not interested in making a ring needlessly heavy.
I am also not interested in shaving a band down until it becomes structurally nervous just to hit a lower price.
A wide sculptural ring uses more metal than a delicate solitaire.
A large centre stone may need more substantial shoulders or gallery support.
A bezel can require more metal than a minimal prong setting.
Those differences are visible in the quote because they are real in the object.
Design complexity matters even when the ring looks simple
A ring can look clean and still be technically complex.
Low-profile settings, unusual stone orientations, integrated bezels and sculptural bands often require more design work precisely because there is less room for error.
Minimal does not mean automatic.
The Shared Horizon Ring, for example, looks visually clean, but the split sculptural band and oval setting have to agree structurally and proportionally.
CAD is part of the work
When a ring needs CAD, the model is not a free computer picture.
It is where I solve:
- stone dimensions
- setting wall thickness
- band width
- finger size
- gallery height
- clearance for a wedding band
- structural relationships between components
That design labour exists whether the final ring is elaborate or visually restrained.
Stone setting changes the quote
A solitaire with one centre stone is not the same setting job as:
- a halo
- a cluster
- multiple side stones
- pavΓ©
- a complex bezel
- an unusual shaped stone
The Marquise Sapphire Engagement Ring sits in a different labour category from a straightforward solitaire because the cluster composition and multiple stones demand more design and setting work.
Wedding-band planning can affect the engagement-ring cost
If a flush-fit wedding band matters, I may need to adjust the engagement-ring setting before it is made.
That can influence:
- setting height
- gallery shape
- band geometry
- how the ring is engineered from the side
Alternatively, we can keep the engagement ring low and design a contour band later.
Neither approach is βfree,β but thinking about it early usually prevents paying to solve the problem twice.
What do Design by Athena engagement rings cost right now?
Your final custom quote depends on the exact project, but the current collection gives useful real-world anchors.
The Sea Grape Botanical Engagement Ring currently begins at $2,800 CAD in 14K yellow gold.
The Tide Ring currently begins at $2,500 CAD in 14K yellow gold.
The Chosen Path Ring begins at $5,000 CAD in 14K yellow or rose gold.
The Marquise Sapphire Engagement Ring begins at $5,800 CAD in 14K gold.
Those are not βlevels of quality.β
They are different designs, amounts of metal, stone arrangements and production requirements.
Can you make a custom engagement ring for $2,500?
Potentially, depending on the stone, metal, scale and design.
A simpler 14K gold ring using a lab-grown coloured stone gives us much more flexibility than a platinum ring built around a large natural diamond.
I would rather work from your actual budget than pretend every project belongs at the same number.
What about $5,000?
That opens more options.
Depending on the design, we may be able to explore:
- larger lab sapphires
- lab-grown diamonds
- more substantial 14K construction
- 18K in simpler designs
- more complex setting work
Again, the question is what you want the money to do.
And if the budget is $10,000 or more?
At that point, the conversation expands further into premium natural stones, larger diamonds, platinum, heavier 18K construction and more complex one-of-a-kind designs.
But spending more is not the goal.
A $10,000 budget does not require us to spend $10,000 if the right ring costs less.
Should you tell your jeweller the budget?
Yes.
Please.
A budget saves time.
It prevents me from sourcing stones you would never consider.
It lets me decide where to protect the design and where we have flexibility.
If the stone matters most, perhaps we simplify the setting.
If the sculptural ring matters most, perhaps we choose a lab stone.
If platinum matters, perhaps we reduce scale.
Budget is not an embarrassing number.
It is part of the design brief.
What is included in a custom quote?
Depending on the project, a quote may include:
- design development
- CAD/model work
- centre and accent stones
- metal
- casting
- bench labour
- stone setting
- finishing
- engraving where applicable
Once the scope is agreed and you choose to proceed, I take a 50% non-refundable retainer to begin the project. The remaining balance is due before final delivery or shipping.
Do not compare two quotes until you know they describe the same ring
A $4,000 quote and a $6,500 quote are not automatically competing offers.
Check:
- 14K vs 18K vs platinum
- lab vs natural centre stone
- stone size and grade
- solid construction vs hollowed structure
- custom CAD vs modified stock setting
- number of accent stones
- setting method
- aftercare and revisions
Compare objects, not just totals.
The right budget is the one that lets the ring do its job
I do not believe an engagement ring needs to reach a particular number to be meaningful.
I do believe it should be built properly.
If we need to make the design smaller, choose a lab stone or simplify the setting to stay within budget, that is a rational design decision.
I would rather make a strong $3,000 ring than a compromised $5,000 ring trying to imitate a $12,000 one.
