Sterling Silver Jewelry in Canada: What to Look for Before You Buy

If you are searching for sterling silver jewelry in Canada, you will find everything from $20 earrings to substantial handmade rings and one-of-a-kind pieces costing hundreds of dollars.

All of them may be described as β€œsterling silver.”

That does not mean they are the same thing.

925 tells you what the alloy is. It does not tell you whether the jewelry is well made.

The quality of a sterling silver piece depends on much more: how much metal is actually there, how the piece is constructed, how stones are set, how the surface is finished, whether the design has been engineered for wear, and whether there is a maker standing behind it.

This guide is for anyone shopping for handmade sterling silver jewelry in Canada who wants to understand what they are paying for before they buy.

What is sterling silver?

Sterling silver is a precious-metal alloy containing 92.5% silver. The remaining 7.5% is made up of other metals, commonly copper or a combination of alloying metals, to give the silver more strength and durability than pure silver would have on its own.

That is where the familiar 925 mark comes from.

If a piece is solid sterling silver, the metal itself is sterling throughout. That is very different from a base-metal piece with a thin layer of silver plating applied to the surface.

Both can look bright and silver-coloured when new. They will not necessarily wear the same way over time.

Is 925 sterling silver real silver?

Yes.

Sterling silver is real silver. It is simply alloyed rather than pure because jewelry needs enough strength to survive daily wear.

The word β€œsterling” is not a downgrade from silver. It is a recognized jewelry standard designed to balance precious-metal content with practical durability.

For rings, earrings, pendants, bracelets and other wearable pieces, that balance is one reason sterling silver has remained such an important jewelry metal.

Solid sterling silver vs silver-plated jewelry

This is one of the first distinctions I would check before buying.

Solid sterling silver means the piece is made from sterling silver throughout.

Silver plated means a thin layer of silver has been applied over another metal.

Plated jewelry can be perfectly appropriate when you want an inexpensive fashion piece. The problem comes when the material is unclear and the customer assumes she is buying solid precious metal.

Look for specific language such as:

  • 925 sterling silver
  • solid sterling silver
  • Argentium silver 935 or 960
  • silver plated
  • silver tone

Those descriptions do not mean the same thing.

A good jewelry listing should make the material obvious rather than make you hunt for it.

What actually makes sterling silver jewelry good quality?

1. Enough metal for the job

A delicate earring can be beautifully made with relatively little metal. A statement ring, cuff or stone setting needs more structure.

Thickness matters.

A ring that looks substantial in a photograph but has been hollowed or thinned to the point of weakness may not stand up to years of wear. A very fine prong or underbuilt band may deform long before a properly engineered one would.

This is one reason comparing sterling silver jewelry only by gram weight or raw silver price is misleading. Good design uses the right amount of metal in the right places.

2. Clean construction

Jewelry has stress points: solder seams, bails, clasps, earring posts, ring shanks and stone settings.

Those details are not glamorous, but they matter.

A well-made piece should feel intentional from the front and the back. The joins should be appropriate for the design. The clasp should suit the weight of the chain. An earring post should not feel flimsy compared with the earring it supports.

You do not need to be a metalsmith to notice whether a piece feels balanced and secure in your hand.

3. Stone settings that protect the stone

If the jewelry includes gemstones, look at how the stone is held.

Bezel, prong, flush and other settings all have legitimate uses. What matters is whether the setting fits the stone and the way the piece will be worn.

A ring takes far more impact than a pendant. A tall stone setting may look dramatic, but it may not be the best choice for someone who works with her hands every day.

The design should account for real life, not just the product photograph.

4. A finish that suits the design

Sterling silver can be highly polished, satin finished, textured, hammered, oxidized or intentionally left with visible evidence of the hand.

None of those finishes is automatically more luxurious than another.

The important thing is consistency.

A polished surface should look deliberately polished. A satin finish should feel even. Oxidation should reinforce the design rather than hide poor finishing.

Surface finish is one of the places where time at the bench becomes visible.

5. A design that has been made for wear

Good jewelry is not only attractive on a white background.

It needs to sit properly on a body.

Rings should feel balanced on the finger. Earrings should have enough support for their weight. Pendants should hang correctly from their bail. Bracelets need appropriate closures and enough movement to be comfortable without becoming vulnerable.

This sounds obvious, but it is one of the clearest differences between jewelry designed by someone who understands construction and jewelry designed mainly for appearance.

Why can two sterling silver pieces have completely different prices?

This is one of the most common misunderstandings around silver jewelry.

If both pieces are marked 925, why is one $40 and another $400?

Because the metal is only one part of the finished object.

Price can reflect:

  • the amount of sterling silver used
  • original design development
  • wax carving or hand fabrication
  • CAD work when appropriate
  • casting
  • gemstone cost and sourcing
  • stone setting
  • soldering and assembly
  • hand finishing and polishing
  • small-batch or one-of-a-kind production
  • the maker’s skill and time
  • customization and client communication

A simple sterling silver stud and a sculptural gemstone ring can both be legitimate 925 jewelry while requiring completely different amounts of work.

That is why I would never judge silver jewelry by the metal price alone.

Does sterling silver tarnish?

Yes. Sterling silver can tarnish.

Tarnish is a surface reaction. It does not mean the silver has become β€œbad,” and it does not automatically mean the piece is low quality.

Humidity, air chemistry, skin chemistry, cosmetics, storage and how often the piece is worn can all affect how quickly silver changes colour.

The good news is that solid sterling silver can usually be cleaned and repolished because the silver is not merely a thin surface coating.

That is very different from plating, where aggressive polishing can eventually remove the plated layer itself.

We will go much deeper into tarnish and cleaning in separate guides, because each deserves more than a paragraph.

Can you wear sterling silver every day?

Often, yes.

But β€œsterling silver” does not automatically mean β€œindestructible.”

An everyday ring should be built differently from a pair of occasional statement earrings. A heavy pendant needs an appropriate chain. A gemstone ring needs a setting suited to both the stone and the wearer.

The better question is:

Was this particular piece designed for the way I plan to wear it?

If you are buying something for constant wear, ask.

A serious jeweller should be able to tell you.

What should you look for when buying sterling silver jewelry online in Canada?

Use this quick checklist.

  • Material: Does the listing clearly say solid 925 sterling silver or another specific alloy?
  • Maker: Is there a recognizable jeweller or studio behind the work?
  • Construction: Does the piece appear appropriately built for its intended use?
  • Finish: Is the surface treatment intentional and consistent?
  • Scale: Are dimensions shown, or can you understand the actual size?
  • Stones: Are gemstone type and origin clearly described when relevant?
  • Photos: Can you see enough of the piece to understand what you are buying?
  • Service: Can you ask questions about sizing, care or customization?

Canadian sterling silver studios currently ranking well in search tend to emphasize exactly these trust signals: solid 925 silver, Canadian studio production, small-batch or handmade work, process transparency and direct maker access.

Those are useful signals because they tell you more than a lifestyle photograph ever could.

Handmade sterling silver jewelry in Canada

If you specifically want handmade sterling silver jewelry made in Canada, the advantage is not simply that a person touched the piece.

The advantage is accountability.

You can know who designed it. You can ask what the metal is. You can ask how the stone is set. You can find out whether the piece is one-of-a-kind, made to order or part of a small production run.

At Design by Athena, I work from a Toronto studio and design jewelry in sterling silver, Argentium silver and precious metals using a combination of traditional bench work, wax carving, hand finishing and specialist processes when a particular piece calls for them.

The work moves between mythology, ocean forms, botanical structure and custom commissions.

If you prefer jewelry with a specific point of view rather than generic silver basics, that is where I would begin.

Sterling silver rings

If rings are what brought you here, start with the Rings collection.

You will find handmade silver rings ranging from more minimal forms to gemstone pieces and sculptural statement designs.

Later in this series, I will devote an entire article to what to look for when buying a sterling silver ring, because ring construction deserves its own conversation.

Sterling silver earrings

For studs, dangles, gemstone earrings and more sculptural pieces, browse the Earrings collection.

Earrings are often one of the easiest ways to begin buying handmade silver because you can experience the finish and craftsmanship without needing ring sizing.

Ready-to-ship sterling silver jewelry

If you do not want to wait for a made-to-order piece, visit Ready to Ship.

This is where I would send someone who has just discovered the studio and wants to see what is physically available now.

Silver with mythology and symbolism

The Goddess Pantheon Collection uses sterling silver and precious metals to explore figures including Athena, Hera, Artemis, Demeter, Hestia, Nike, Persephone, Circe and Medusa.

The purpose is not novelty mythology jewelry. Each design starts with the character, symbols and idea behind the figure, then gets reduced into something wearable.

Silver inspired by the ocean

If your taste runs darker, more sculptural and more elemental, explore The Night Sea.

The collection is built around black spinel, horizon lines, deep water and the place where light meets depth.

What about Argentium silver?

You may also see me work in Argentium silver.

Argentium is not simply another marketing name for standard sterling. It is a different family of silver alloys, available in higher silver purities such as 935 and 960.

I am deliberately not going to compress that discussion into two sentences here.

It deserves its own comparison because standard sterling and Argentium behave differently at the bench and offer different advantages depending on the design.

For now, the useful takeaway is simple: if a jeweller lists 925, 935 or 960, those numbers are telling you something real about the alloy.

Can sterling silver jewelry be custom made?

Yes.

One of the reasons silver is such an interesting custom-jewelry metal is that it allows for substantial design, texture and gemstone work at a lower material cost than solid gold or platinum.

I accept selected custom jewelry commissions in sterling and Argentium silver when the project is a good fit.

That can include statement rings, gemstone pieces, memorial work, heirloom redesigns and jewelry built around a specific idea or story.

If you have already searched dozens of stores and cannot find what you are picturing, commissioning the piece may make more sense than continuing to compromise.

Frequently asked questions about sterling silver jewelry in Canada

What does 925 mean on jewelry?

925 means the alloy contains 92.5% silver. This is the standard composition commonly referred to as sterling silver.

Is sterling silver better than silver-plated jewelry?

They serve different purposes. Solid sterling silver is precious metal throughout and can generally be refinished and polished over time. Silver-plated jewelry has a surface layer of silver over another metal and is usually a lower-cost option.

Why is handmade sterling silver jewelry more expensive?

The silver itself is only one cost. Handmade jewelry can also include original design work, fabrication, carving, casting, stone sourcing, setting, soldering, finishing, polishing and individual quality control.

Does real sterling silver tarnish?

Yes. Genuine sterling silver can tarnish. Tarnish is a surface reaction and can usually be cleaned or polished from solid silver.
