Lab-Created, Synthetic, Simulant and Imitation Gemstones: What Do Those Words Actually Mean?
Gemstone language gets messy because ordinary English and gemology do not always use the same words the same way.
“Synthetic” sounds fake.
“Lab-created” sounds more reassuring.
“Simulated” sounds like it might be lab-grown.
They are not interchangeable.
What is a natural gemstone?
A natural gemstone formed through natural geological processes.
It may still be treated after mining.
Natural does not automatically mean untreated.
That distinction is covered in Gemstone Treatments Explained.
What is a synthetic gemstone?
In gemology, synthetic does not mean “plastic fake.”
A synthetic gemstone is laboratory-created material with essentially the same chemical composition, crystal structure and properties as its natural counterpart.
Examples include:
- lab-grown diamond
- lab-grown sapphire
- lab-grown ruby
- lab-grown emerald
Those are real versions of their gemstone material with a different origin.
Is lab-created the same as synthetic?
Often, yes.
Lab-grown, laboratory-created and synthetic are commonly used for material produced in a lab that corresponds to a natural gemstone.
I prefer “lab-grown” or “lab-created” in customer-facing language because it describes origin clearly without the everyday-language confusion around the word synthetic.
What is a simulant?
A simulant looks like another gemstone but is not the same material.
Cubic zirconia can simulate diamond.
Moissanite can be used as a diamond simulant.
Colourless sapphire can also resemble diamond.
The key point is chemical and physical identity: a simulant is not the gem it resembles.
Is moissanite a fake diamond?
No.
Moissanite is silicon carbide, its own gemstone material.
When it is sold as moissanite, the description is accurate.
It becomes a diamond simulant when used specifically to imitate diamond appearance.
Read Moissanite vs Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamond.
Is cubic zirconia synthetic diamond?
No.
Cubic zirconia is zirconium oxide.
It is a lab-manufactured material often used to simulate diamond, but it does not have diamond's chemical composition or physical properties.
Is lab-grown diamond a diamond simulant?
No.
Lab-grown diamond is diamond.
Its origin differs from natural diamond, but the material is fundamentally diamond rather than a look-alike substitute.
What is an imitation gemstone?
Imitation is a broad term for material presented to look like another gem.
Glass can imitate ruby.
Synthetic spinel can imitate several coloured gems.
A simulant can be natural or man-made; what matters is that it is standing in visually for another material.
What about opal doublets and triplets?
Assembled stones are another category.
An opal doublet may combine a thin slice of natural opal with a dark backing.
A triplet adds a transparent cap.
That is not automatically fraud. It is a construction method that should be disclosed clearly because it changes durability and value.
What does “created sapphire” mean?
Usually lab-created or synthetic sapphire.
Look for a seller who states the origin clearly instead of hiding behind vague terms such as “sapphire-style stone.”
Do lab-grown gems have inclusions?
They can.
Laboratory growth leaves its own internal features and growth structures.
Lab-grown does not mean every stone is flawless.
Are lab-grown gemstones cheaper?
Usually much less expensive than comparable rare natural gemstones because the supply and rarity structure is different.
That can let you choose larger size or more controlled colour.
It does not make the stone chemically inferior to its natural counterpart.
Do lab-grown gemstones have resale value?
They generally do not carry the same rarity premium or secondary-market behaviour as exceptional natural stones.
Buy them because you want the material and design, not because you expect geological rarity value.
Which terms should make you ask questions?
- diamond alternative
- diamond-like
- created stone
- simulated
- gemstone equivalent
- premium crystal
None is automatically dishonest, but each deserves a precise material description.
Why disclosure matters
You cannot compare price fairly until you know whether you are looking at:
- natural untreated sapphire
- heated natural sapphire
- lab-grown sapphire
- glass imitating sapphire
They can all be blue. They are not the same product.
Frequently asked questions
Is synthetic ruby real ruby?
It is ruby material grown in a laboratory rather than formed naturally.
Is lab-grown diamond fake?
No. It is diamond with laboratory origin.
Is moissanite lab-grown?
Jewellery moissanite is generally laboratory-grown, but it is moissanite — not lab-grown diamond.
Is CZ a gemstone?
Cubic zirconia is a manufactured crystalline material commonly used in jewellery. It is not diamond.
Material names should clarify, not flatter
The best description is the one that tells you what the object actually is.
Natural, lab-grown, treated and simulant are not quality insults. They are categories you need in order to compare honestly.
