Carat vs Karat: What’s the Difference in Jewelry?
Carat and karat are pronounced the same way.
They measure completely different things.
Carat measures gemstone weight.
Karat describes gold purity.
That is the simple answer.
The useful answer is what those numbers do — and do not — tell you when you are buying jewellery.
What is a carat?
One metric carat equals 200 milligrams.
Gemstones are weighed in carats and smaller units called points, where 100 points equals one carat.
A 0.50 ct diamond weighs half a carat. A 1.25 ct sapphire weighs one and a quarter carats.
Carat is weight, not visible size
This is the part shoppers miss.
Two one-carat gemstones can look very different from the top.
Different materials have different density, different shapes spread weight differently, and deep cuts hide weight below the surface.
So “one carat” does not tell you millimetre dimensions.
Why shape changes face-up size
A marquise can spread one carat over a long outline. A deep cushion may carry more weight vertically.
That is why I always want actual length, width and depth when designing a setting.

What is a karat?
Karat describes how much of a gold alloy is pure gold, measured in 24 parts.
- 24K = essentially pure gold
- 18K = 18 parts gold out of 24, or 75%
- 14K = 14 parts gold out of 24, about 58.5%
- 10K = 10 parts gold out of 24, about 41.7%
The remaining material is alloying metal used to change strength, colour and working properties.
Why isn't jewellery usually 24K?
Pure gold is very soft. For many everyday pieces, alloying gives the metal more practical strength.
That is why engagement rings are commonly made in 14K or 18K rather than 24K.
Does higher karat mean better gold?
It means more pure gold. It does not automatically mean a better jewellery object.
18K gives richer gold content and colour. 14K can offer greater hardness and lower cost.
The right choice depends on the design.

Can a diamond be “18 karat”?
No.
A diamond is measured in carats. The gold ring holding it may be 18 karat.
So you could own a 1.2-carat diamond set in an 18K gold ring.
Why does spelling sometimes vary?
In some countries, “carat” is used for both gemstone weight and gold fineness in general language.
In North American jewellery trade usage, “karat” is the common spelling for gold purity and “carat” for gemstone weight.
Does carat affect price?
Usually, yes, but not alone.
A larger gemstone often costs more, but quality, rarity, colour, clarity, cut and origin matter too.
A poor-quality two-carat stone can cost less than an exceptional one-carat stone.
Does karat affect price?
Yes.
For the same weight and design, 18K generally contains more pure gold and therefore more gold value than 14K.
But finished jewellery price also includes design, labour, casting, setting and gemstones.
Frequently asked questions
Is 1 carat always bigger than 0.90 carat?
It is heavier, but not necessarily dramatically larger face-up. Dimensions matter.
Is 18K softer than 14K?
Generally, comparable 18K alloys are softer because they contain more pure gold, though exact hardness depends on alloy and treatment.
What does 585 mean on gold?
585 indicates approximately 58.5% gold, corresponding to 14K. Read Jewelry Hallmarks Explained for more marks.
Same sound. Different job.
Carat tells you gemstone mass. Karat tells you gold purity.
Neither one, by itself, tells you whether the finished jewellery is well designed or worth owning.
